On December 8, Mrs.
Gammill and I toured the high school and took pictures in order to
provide you with a better understanding of the condition of the high
school. I must say, I was quite shocked and saddened at the poor
condition of the school.
Mrs. Gammill and I
couldn’t help but reminisce about our own high school days and how much
the building had changed and deteriorated. “It has hard to encourage
the students to take pride in their school given the current condition
that it is in,” said Mrs. Gammill.
I have added pictures
of the various areas that are some of the major concerns at this time.
If you notice there are several pictures that show lots of huge cracks
on the interior and exterior of the building. The cracks are due to the
fact the building is shifting and falling in. As Mrs. Gammill informed
us last summer at the alumni banquet, the school has received a
$1,000,000 QZAB low interest loan to fix the roof on the high school.
They are also going to have the foundation raised up to correct the
foundation issues. The repairs that will be made with the loan will be
the roof, foundation, grease traps in accordance with code, and fire
doors in accordance with code. Some other issues that were going to be
resolved with the monies allocated were going to be installing central
heat and air which would be $300,000 to $350,000. The utilities for the
school are astronomical due to the absence of central heat and air and
the window air conditioners that are used to cool the rooms. Also, the
foundation issues have caused windows not to close and teachers have
actually stuffed paper towel in the open areas to keep the air out.
When the window air conditioners are replaced, they are $3,000 due to
the fact they are commercial grade. The school electrical systems also
need to be updated due to all the electronic equipment such as computers
and smart boards that overload the outdated system.

Dear HHS Graduates, Ever had an epiphany? Well, this
idea for raising funds for OUR school, Holdenville Public Schools, has
been on my mind for some time. Our superintendent, Shellie Gammill and I
are following through with this and we hope you will be excited enough
to join us. Please see the attached.
If you've ever wanted to help your school, now is the time. HHS is
beginning a Donor Member Club and we are asking you to carefully
consider allowing a monthly $25.00 e-debit from your checking account to
go into a fund at the school for the superintendent to use on projects
such as building maintenance, beautification, real estate purchases
around the campus, upgrading the football stadium, etc. You will be
placed on the Donor Member Club rolls and if you join now, you will have
the DISTINCTION of being a charter member. All this will cost you is
$25.00 a month, e-debited from your account AND you will have a nice
$250.00 tax deduction at the end of each year. You will also be kept
informed as to what projects are coming up and will have input as to
some of the improvements.
500 people x $25.00 per month is $12,500.00 x 12 is $150,000.00 per
year.
This is our initial goal! See what your $25.00 a month can mean to
the school?! Every school has needs, but ours should lead the way and
with this plan, we are creating a first! John Allford, HHS Class of
1968, is setting up the account at the First National Bank & Trust,
Holdenville.
Request the form here.
Donor club
Prayerfully consider this request, and join today. Our school needs
us, always has, always will!
We also need you to spread the word to others.
Best regards and Merry Christmas to all of you. Heather Smith

Some of the alumni
are buying benches like the one below to put around the high school.
They will have a plaque under them that will note a dedication to
someone or donated by a class or group. The cost is around $700 for
the bench and the
plaque. The school will build the retaining wall back around
the front of the high school and the benches will be in front for
kids to sit on. The dirt is washing away and the trees are dying.
Of course, the roof project is first priority.
